When is the Right On! Sacramento event?

March 25, 2023, 12-2pm

Where/When do volunteers walkers meet?

The volunteer walkers will congregate near the Robert Matsui Courthouse outdoor the main entrance near the fountain.Volunteers should arrive between 11:15 and 11:30am to pick up their t-shirts, get directions and find their leader to prepare.

Who can participate as a walker?

How long is the event?

The walk is approximately 1 ½ hours and then there will be a short musical culmination for 5 minutes at the end point in front of the steps at the Robert Matsui Courthouse.

How far is the walk?

It is only 14 blocks long, but it will take 1 1/2 hours to make the loop because the pace is very slow and there will be moments of pauses at stop signs. We start and end at the Robert Matsui Courthouse. We go past DOCO toward Capital Mall and loop back around to the Courthouse.

Group 5 starts at DOCA and meets at Starbucks with leader Katherine Morris. Group 5 will walk a shorter distance ~ 30 minutes. They will join the other groups 1-4 as they pass by and go with groups 1-4 toward Capital Mall. Group 5 will return to Robert Matsui courthouse at a normal pace.

What should I wear?

Black pants. We suggest a cap, gloves, short scarves if chilly. Since the weather is unpredictable at the end of March, we suggest a turtleneck/thermal long sleeve shirt underneath your t-shirt. All colors of any clothes, and accessories should be black, if not black then shades of browns/dark blues. We suggest sneakers or walking shoes. The Right On! T-shirts need to show front and back so we can’t wear jackets nor backpacks that would hide the QR code. If it is unusually cold, then we will consider printing out the QR codes and taping to jackets as a plan B. Although the jackets would need to remain open in the front. Backpacks, large purses, large handbags not allowed. Fanny packs are OK. Please tie long hair. Sunblock if sunny.

What if it rains?

There will be a rain date. Date TBA

What do I need to bring?

Nothing. We will have water/granola/fig bars at the end for participants. Small FannyPack or small pocket book is allowed, but please do not wear backpacks, purses, grocery bags, or handbags.

What should I expect to do for the procession if a volunteer walker?

We consider the volunteer walkers and musicians as ‘performers.’ We will walk in silence (except musicians who are at the tail end of each group). We will walk in a very very slow pace. We will look straight forward with a neutral expression with pride and solidarity in mind. People should have their phone on silent and phone use prohibited during the 1 1/2 hours. At stop lights/signs people should continue to look straight ahead and not look around. If someone speaks to a walker, they should ignore them. As soon as we begin, walkers should not speak to one another until the end. Every group of 30 walkers (There are 5 groups with gaps between as to avoid traffic jams.) is led by a group leader. They will set the pace and lead the way. Walkers will receive their t-shirt at 11:15am-11:30am at the meeting point, Robert Matsui courthouse.

Will there be bathroom facilities?

There are restaurants and cafes near Golden 1/DOCO center and people should go to the bathroom prior to the walk.

Where will it end?

It will end at the Robert Matsui Courthouse near the fountain.

Where do I park?

People will need to park in a lot or on the street. It is highly suggested to carpool and to plan for at least 15 minutes for parking. People should feed the meter so that they have a cushion and return at 2:30pm (In case the procession is delayed for any reason.)

Will there be leaders to guide us for the procession?

Yes . The 150 people will be divided into 5 groups with a leader or coordinator for each group. Your leader/coordinator will contact you 1 week before the walk to give you specific directions and confirm your participation. The five groups will walk the same route but be staggered with about a 25-35′ gap as to not stop traffic.

Can I choose to walk with my friend or family member?

Groups have already been formed. Once in a group, we ask people stand behind someone they do not know because one of the goals of this walk is to get people in proximity to others they do not know and mixing the different ages, genders, and ethnicities within the umbrella of ‘Asian.’ If you have a special reason why you need to be with a particular other walker, please contact your leader and we will need to switch another person in another group. Only group 5 (Mobility group) has a special route, meeting point/time.
