In 2009 the City of Paris finished renovation of the famous squat, 59 Rivoli located in a six story bank, Crédit Lyonnais in the most expensive neighborhood of the city. For 15 years artist had lived illegally in the building, yet they ran the space as an organized cooperative art residency program. Thirty artists live in the building. On the main floor is a two story gallery that is available for the artists to exhibit work. The resident artists welcomed outside artists and curators to propose events and exhibits. I approached the director, Swiss Moroc with the initial idea to use just their storefront window for a project, Euros Per Minute. However, they offered the entire two story gallery for me to program. I decided to curate a series of performances, concerts, dinners, pop up stores, and exhibits in the month of December 2009 with the goal of fostering more community and diversity. Over 50 artists were involved in this unsponsored and unfunded series I called ‘Freespace.’
The list of free events included a Peruvian street band, a martial arts group doing a performance of tai-chi with shopping bags, a Taureg jewelry pop up store, poetry readings, a no-wave concert, DJ and VJ sets, a dinner party, a group art exhibit, and experimental jazz concerts. Some of the artists included Thierry Madiot, Atau Tanaka, Cécile Babiole, Rhys Chatham, Nina Canal, He-He, Christian Blanc, Kentaro, Steve Dalachinsky, Yuko Otomo, Stuart Krusee, Nina Zivancevic, and many more.
