According to AARP (American Association of Retired Persons), a record number of Californians are turning 65 in 2024, and studies reveal that 50% of residents aged 55 and up have no retirement savings. ADUs (Accessory Dwelling Units) or ‘Granny Flats’ can help address the senior housing crisis. Angie who is a 5th generation Chinese Californian predicts intergenerational living—common in Asian and Latino families—could address rising housing costs, asks, “How will we live when ‘boomerang kids’, aging parents, and grandparents all need housing simultaneously?” For many, the thought of three generations sharing one property may require some adjustment.
This is the backstory of ‘Yes! to Granny’ – an art performance that aims to raise public awareness on the urgent state of the housing crisis, particularly for our aging and senior residents. After a conversation with associate planner with the City of Sacramento, Nguyen Nguyen, who sees ADUs and other neighborhood-scale infill housing options as priority solutions to this urgent challenge, Angie conceptualized the art campaign. As an artist, Angie believes that art can help to elevate this discussion and play a role in influencing societal values around this topic.
This project was sponsored by a California Arts Council Creative Corps grant via the Office of Arts and Culture. The Office of Arts and Culture placed five professional artists in different City departments/programs to conceptualize artistic strategies to increase civic engagement. Angie was placed in Long Range Planning.
