If you could imagine a Surreal world with a Gorky painting married to a Mondrian , but having an affair with a silent Brakhage, simultaneously flirting with Truffaut’s eye capturing moments that have little to do with the story, but with life passing by, then you will know what to expect in Eng’s video performances.
The stage resembles a complex VJ set with multiple projections and stacks of powerbooks, but the process combines music composition, painting and video making. In this case as with past projects, Memobile started with the idea of the nomad or a life based upon constant mobility guided by the earth’s elements. Footage from the artist’s world travels and odd saved objects lying on friends’ bookshelves were captured along with samples of flying insects. Like an early abstract expressionist painter with roots in surrealism, Eng contemplated associated emotions and moods to manipulate the images in real-time.
